Hi there :) I have a beautiful little girl, Kylie. This blog is pretty much all about her. She's my world. On a side note, if you don't like the LGBTQ community, I suggest you don't follow me because I am a part of it.

There was another incident report yesterday and I spent about 10 minutes talking to her teacher about other ways to get Kylie to apologize and also be gentle to her friends.  Since there are twenty other kids in the class it’s difficult to catch her every time she hits or pulls hair so the teacher is going to shadow her next week to keep her accountable.  Hopefully this works.

Check out the contrast between these search results. Not a single “loser”, “easy”, “desperate”, “stupid”, “scum” or similar insult in the search results for fathers.

Why, society, are single fathers so often seen with sympathy and admiration, yet single mothers are painted as a washed-up, disgusting strain on the system?

This is fucked.

I know this is rhetorical, but we know the reason.
Motherhood is not valued in this country, it’s demanded. We have people fighting tooth and nail against abortion, birth control, and then any social program that helps poor mothers. If the world sees you as a woman, you are expected to desire, birth, and raise children, and if you don’t do that, or you do it while poor, or single, or not white, you’re not only failing as a woman but as a mother.
But men, they don’t get defined by their reproductive abilities! They get to be multi-dimensional! And if they spare an occasional thought for the children they brought into the world, it’s a cherry on top of their identity as a person.
Women don’t get the luxury of existing as people outside of parenting, even in 2013. And until we do, this is the shit we’ll be dealing with.

"Motherhood is not valued in this country, it’s demanded."

omg. Are you gonna say something? I’d be pissed.
Yes I am definitely going to address it with the teachers tomorrow.  I’m also going to try to come up with ideas to address the hitting and hair pulling thing.  I mean she learned the behaviors at school from the other kids.  We’ve been talking every day about being gentle and she shows me how she’s gentle by petting my hair and stroking my arms lol.  I just don’t see how she interacts at school so I can’t figure out how else to teach her not to hurt others.

Kylie has apparently been hitting and pulling hair at school recently and she was sent home with two incident reports today.  For those who can’t read it, it says, “Kylie hit another child on his back while playing at the Science Center. Talked to Kylie about keeping our hands to ourselves. She refused to give a hug when the other child asked her and still refused to do so.”
Huge red flag the moment I read it.  You do not force my child to give hugs to anyone, regardless of the situation.  She does not owe hugs.  There are other ways to apologize to her friends for her behavior.  Shaming her for not giving hugs is absolutely INSANE.  It’s called boundaries.  Don’t cross them.

"Following an unmedicated birth, my midwife assisted me in latching on my newborn, Jacob. To everyone’s delight and amazement, we could all hear him enjoying his first swallows of colostrum, the rich milk full of protective antibodies that is produced in the first days after birth. We called my best friend and La Leche League leader, Simone, to come over right away. When Simone entered our bedroom and saw me trying to latch Jacob on, this time without the help of my midwife, she thought it was impossible — that there just isn’t enough tissue there for a baby to latch onto. But she didn’t let on, and instead suggested different ways for me to try holding my meagre chest tissue so that Jacob could grab on. I persisted, and so did my baby."
